Title
Multiple Vulnerabilities in VMware Products (Cat I impact)
Discussion
VMware has released security advisories addressing multiple vulnerabilities affecting various VMware products. To exploit these vulnerabilities, attackers would utilize various TTPs (Tactics, Techniques and Procedures). Successful exploitation of the most serious of these vulnerabilities would result in the complete compromise of affected systems. At this time, there are known exploits associated with some of the identified vulnerabilities; USCYBERCOM is not aware of any DoD related incidents. CVE-2008-0085: SQL Server 7.0 SP4, 2000 SP4, 2005 SP1 and SP2, 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) SP4, 2005 Express Edition SP1 and SP2, and 2000 Desktop Engine (WMSDE); Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) 1.0 SP4; and Internal Database (WYukon) SP2 does not initialize memory pages when reallocating memory, which allows database operators to obtain sensitive information (database contents) via unknown vectors related to memory page reuse. CVE-2008-0086: Buffer overflow in the convert function in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP4, 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) SP4, and 2000 Desktop Engine (WMSDE) allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via a crafted SQL expression. CVE-2008-0106: Buffer overflow in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP1 and SP2, and 2005 Express Edition SP1 and SP2, allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via a crafted insert statement. CVE-2008-0107: Integer underflow in SQL Server 7.0 SP4, 2000 SP4, 2005 SP1 and SP2, 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) SP4, 2005 Express Edition SP1 and SP2, and 2000 Desktop Engine (WMSDE); Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) 1.0 SP4; and Internal Database (WYukon) SP2 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via a (1) SMB or (2) WebDAV pathname for an on-disk file (aka stored backup file) with a crafted record size value, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow, aka "SQL Server Memory Corruption Vulnerability." CVE-2008-3825: pam_krb5 2.2.14 in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 and earlier, when the existing_ticket option is enabled, uses incorrect privileges when reading a Kerberos credential cache, which allows local users to gain privileges by setting the KRB5CCNAME environment variable to an arbitrary cache filename and running the (1) su or (2) sudo program. NOTE: there may be a related vector involving sshd that has limited relevance. CVE-2008-5416: Heap-based buffer overflow in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP4, 8.00.2050, 8.00.2039, and earlier; SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) SP4; SQL Server 2005 SP2 and 9.00.1399.06; SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (WMSDE) on Windows Server 2003 SP1 and SP2; and Windows Internal Database (WYukon) SP2 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (access violation exception) or execute arbitrary code by calling the sp_replwritetovarbin extended stored procedure with a set of invalid parameters that trigger memory overwrite, aka "SQL Server sp_replwritetovarbin Limited Memory Overwrite Vulnerability." CVE-2009-1384: pam_krb5 2.2.14 through 2.3.4, as used in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5, generates different password prompts depending on whether the user account exists, which allows remote attackers to enumerate valid usernames. CVE-2009-2693: Directory traversal vulnerability in Apache Tomcat 5.5.0 through 5.5.28 and 6.0.0 through 6.0.20 allows remote attackers to create or overwrite arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in an entry in a WAR file, as demonstrated by a ../../bin/catalina.bat entry. CVE-2009-2901: The autodeployment process in Apache Tomcat 5.5.0 through 5.5.28 and 6.0.0 through 6.0.20, when autoDeploy is enabled, deploys appBase files that remain from a failed undeploy, which might allow remote attackers to bypass intended authentication requirements via HTTP requests. CVE-2009-2902: Directory traversal vulnerability in Apache Tomcat 5.5.0 through 5.5.28 and 6.0.0 through 6.0.20 allows remote attackers to delete work-directory files via directory traversal sequences in a WAR filename, as demonstrated by the ...war filename. CVE-2009-3548: The Windows installer for Apache Tomcat 6.0.0 through 6.0.20, 5.5.0 through 5.5.28, and possibly earlier versions uses a blank default password for the administrative user, which allows remote attackers to gain privileges. CVE-2009-3555: The TLS protocol, and the SSL protocol 3.0 and possibly earlier, as used in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0, mod_ssl in the Apache HTTP Server 2.2.14 and earlier, OpenSSL before 0.9.8l, GnuTLS 2.8.5 and earlier, Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS) 3.12.4 and earlier, multiple Cisco products, and other products, does not properly associate renegotiation handshakes with an existing connection, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to insert data into HTTPS sessions, and possibly other types of sessions protected by TLS or SSL, by sending an unauthenticated request that is processed retroactively by a server in a post-renegotiation context, related to a "plaintext injection" attack, aka the "Project Mogul" issue. CVE-2010-3081: The compat_alloc_user_space functions in include/asm/compat.h files in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36-rc4-git2 on 64-bit platforms do not properly allocate the userspace memory required for the 32-bit compatibility layer, which allows local users to gain privileges by leveraging the ability of the compat_mc_getsockopt function (aka the MCAST_MSFILTER getsockopt support) to control a certain length value, related to a "stack pointer underflow" issue, as exploited in the wild in September 2010. CVE-2010-3316: The run_coprocess function in pam_xauth.c in the pam_xauth module in Linux-PAM (aka pam) before 1.1.2 does not check the return values of the setuid, setgid, and setgroups system calls, which might allow local users to read arbitrary files by executing a program that relies on the pam_xauth PAM check. CVE-2010-3435: The (1) pam_env and (2) pam_mail modules in Linux-PAM (aka pam) before 1.1.2 use root privileges during read access to files and directories that belong to arbitrary user accounts, which might allow local users to obtain sensitive information by leveraging this filesystem activity, as demonstrated by a symlink attack on the .pam_environment file in a user's home directory.
