Cisco IOS Switch NDM STIG:
CISC-ND-000250
(in versions v2 r3 through v1 r0.1)
Title
The Cisco switch must be configured to generate audit records when successful/unsuccessful attempts to log on with access privileges occur. (Cat II impact)
Discussion
Without generating audit records that are specific to the security and mission needs of the organization, it would be difficult to establish, correlate, and investigate the events relating to an incident or identify those responsible for one. Audit records can be generated from various components within the information system (e.g., module or policy filter).
Check Content
Review the Cisco switch configuration to verify that it generates audit records of all logon attempts. The configuration example below will log all logon attempts: login on-failure log login on-success log If the Cisco switch is not configured to generate audit records of successful/unsuccessful attempts to log on, this is a finding.
Fix Text
Configure the Cisco switch to log all logon attempts as shown in the example below: SW1(config)#login on-failure log SW1(config)#login on-success log SW1(config)#end
