SP13-00-000145
(in versions v1 r7 through v1 r5)
Title
SharePoint must use mechanisms for authentication to a cryptographic module that meet the requirements of applicable federal laws, Executive Orders, directives, policies, regulations, standards, and guidance for such authentication. (Cat I impact)
Discussion
Encryption is only as good as the encryption modules utilized. Unapproved cryptographic module algorithms cannot be verified, and cannot be relied upon to provide confidentiality or integrity and DoD data may be compromised due to weak algorithms. Applications utilizing encryption are required to use approved encryption modules that meet the requirements of applicable federal laws, Executive Orders, directives, policies, regulations, standards, and guidance. FIPS 140-2 is the current standard for validating cryptographic modules and NSA Type-X (where X=1, 2, 3, 4) products are NSA certified hardware based encryption modules.
Check Content
Review the SharePoint server configuration to ensure mechanisms are used for authentication to a cryptographic module that meet the requirements of applicable federal laws, Executive Orders, directives, policies, regulations, standards, and guidance for such authentication. Open MMC. Click "File", "Add/Remove Snap-in", and "add Group Policy Object Editor". Enter a name for the Group Policy Object, or accept the default. Click "Finish". Click "OK". Navigate to Computer Policy >> Computer Configuration >> Administrative Templates >> Network >> SSL Configuration settings. Right-click "SSL Configuration Settings", click "SSL Cipher Suite Orde"r, click "Edit". In the "SSL Cipher Suite Order" dialog box, if "Enabled" is not selected, this is a finding. Under Options, in the "SSL Cipher Suites" text box, verify the following text is displayed: TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384_P521,TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384_P384,TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_128_GCM_SHA256_P521,TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_128_GCM_SHA256_P384,TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_128_GCM_SHA256_P256,TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA384_P521,TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA384_P384,TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA256_P521,TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA256_P384,TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA256_P256,TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA384_P521,TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA384_P384,TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA384_P256,TLS_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384,TLS_RSA_WITH_AES_128_GCM_SHA256,TLS_DHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384,TLS_DHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA Click "OK". If any ciphers other than those listed above are present, this is a finding.
Fix Text
Configure the SharePoint server to use mechanisms for authentication to a cryptographic module that meet the requirements of applicable federal laws, Executive Orders, directives, policies, regulations, standards, and guidance for such authentication. Open MMC. Click “File”, “Add/Remove Snap-in”, and “add Group Policy Object Editor”. Enter a name for the Group Policy Object, or accept the default. Click “Finish”. Click “OK”. Navigate to Computer Policy >> Computer Configuration >> Administrative Templates >> Network >> SSL Configuration settings. Right-click “SSL Configuration Settings”, click “SSL Cipher Suite Order”, and then click “Edit”. In the “SSL Cipher Suite Order” dialog box, select "Enabled" option.
